MBM spoke first of the book by Grenfell and Hunt on the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, on the “Logia”, discovered in Egypt in 1897.  Baaed on a collection of sayings of Jesus, of a much earlier date, which may have been the source of the Gospels.  The authors (Grenfell and Hunt) estimate that there were several hundred sayings in the original collection.

These sayings possess a plus that the sayings in the Bible do not have.  The language of the Bible is simpler as compared with the similar sayings of our text.  If therefore these “Sayings” was the source of the Bible they would have had to be trimmed down considerably, to lend themselves to the three Synoptics.

Apocrypha of the New Testament greater in many cases than what is in the New Testament.  In this Apocrypha there are three versions of an Infancy Gospel, allegedly written by Thomas.  Also, the Acts of Thomas have the same flavor as these Sayings.  They have not only a mystical but a Gnostic character.

Irenaeus  In the first few centuries A.D. there were many books concerning the life of Jesus, Mary, Joseph that were common in circulation.  Little by little certain writings received preference.  Irenaeus said: there may not be more than four Gospels.  He means that the real reason for what we now popularly call the bull, the lion, the eagle and the man.  The four Gospels have been spoken of as the four associated with such and such animals.  They are the glyph of the four philosophical elements.  While, philosophically speaking, Irenaeus is correct his words were taken too literally, and became a frame which could not be broken.  A philosophical concept made a letter of the law.  Many of the other material are in the Apocrypha.

Gnostic groups  There have always been groups whose major interest was reality; and their lives have been built around the search for that Reality.  There were such communities in Asia and northern Africa before and after the birth of Jesus.  They had the secret Wisdom-lore, and guarded it.  The Church Fathers, or those who were watching over the carrying through of the teachings of Jesus in those same centuries saw only one thing: the great teaching of Jesus, – whether as Son of God, God Incarnate, etc.  A clash between these sects and the Christian dogma.

Naasene group.  The name comes from an old Hebrew word meaning serpent – the path of the Eternal Life Force toward Wisdom.  They had much of their Wisdom-lore from Assyria, Chaldea and Egypt.  And when the teaching of Jesus appeared upon the scene they accepted it, because it fitted very well into the great Pattern of Wisdom-lore which they had had, and which had come down through the centuries.  There was a rub between those who saw everything in Jesus and these other groups.  Perhaps best illustrated by the words of Dr. Jowett: “Origins too antagonistic, that had beginnings before the Christian beginnings.”

These Gnostic sects had, as part of their literature (something about what Jesus taught) but they had known most of it before.  See “Fragments of a Faith Forgotten”, GRS Mead.

The pattern of Jesus, in spite of the Church Fathers, is Cosmic, Gnostic.  And of that the Sayings which have been recently found give evidence.  Grenfell and Hunt do not doubt the authenticity of the Sayings.  We know, from the writings of Thomas, including the famous Hymn to the Light.  Thomas was capable of hearing and recording Jesus.  Only what you bring gives you an idea of the stature of the man, Jesus.

The seventh Saying of last week, about the city set on a hill.  Note the word established.  An allegorical hill.  The hill is always the height, or stature, of your development — anyone’s development.  Therefore if you have been raising the mount by building higher and higher in your stature, when finally you are established on that high point nothing can make you fall, even if crucified.  Because your life is then within another category.  Like olives growing on a tall tree.  The concept of anointment.  As you grow higher in mystical stature you come to the state where you are growing those qualities that make you ready for anointment.

Occultism involves the laws of stuffs that are hidden to you.  Re Saying six of last week.

Introduction to the second set (see mimeo sheet titled “New Sayings of Jesus, discovered in 1903 at site of the previous find in l897.)  “Every one that harkens to these words shall never taste of death.”  A prophecy.  Not physical death, but meant the death of the higher consciousness.  Instead of negating development the development will continue. You will evolve, and you won’t see death.

“Let not him who seeks (Saying marked (1) on second mimeo sheet.)  Astonished: marvel, wonder.  Plato says the beginning of Philosophy is wonder.  Until the heart opens up to the things that are Larger there is no growth.  Before that it is only opened up to things in the earth.  Three steps (mentioned in this Saying) to keep that moving until the stage of wonder comes to you.  Symbol of the group of physicists???????  A new octave.  If you keep on that way, and follow it, you come to the Kingdom, and there rest.  (MBM said later that rest in this Saying means attainment.)  Anyone knowing the Profundities knows this is true.

2nd Saying  The three elements and the animals that belong to them.  A Gnostic saying.  What is a Kingdom?  A kingdom is a country that has a single head, a ruler, who is the ultimate authority.  That is the distinguishing idea about a kingdom.  The things of higher states have to be described in terms of the things known.  A kingdom nearer to anything in earth to what Jesus meant.  The carrier of the idea of one purpose.  The guiding principle of heaven.  The kingdom and heaven go together.  The “heaven” of resolving conflict in the self, is heaven on a humble level.

We will find reference again and again to the elements in Gnostic lore; earth, the material; water, emotions; air, thoughts — the forces, or energies, in you which lead you through your physical, emotional and mental – which lead you to the higher states, through which you evolve, and which draw you to the Kingdom of Heaven.  That is Gnostically true.

Re the Kingdom of Heaven being within you:  means the interpenetrating of the super-etheric inside of you.  But you do not know it.  Come to know yourself, says Jesus: Try to know what you really are.  Not easy to find out who you are.  Then you will be aware that there are powers inside, in the super-ethers, which you have not evolved.

A “city” is like a small, or local, kingdom.  When you have organized yourself into an ideal “city” — an analogy used by nearly every great tradition down the centuries.  It means inter-relation of parts to the whole, and all under the leadership of a head.

In Sayings 3, 4 and 5 Jesus is intriguing his followers to inquire into those things about which they might have hesitancy.  Re 3: If you don’t know what you are after you won’t get far in achieving it.  It means circumstances too, but above all it is up to you to be ready.  Re 4: Don’t be afraid to know what you want, and to go after it.  There is nothing you can ask that you won’t sometime find out.  “Many that are first shall be last.”  In the Bible, Dives and Lazarus.  Those who seem to be successful in this plane may not really be so.  (reference to the play “Outward Bound.”)  An appeal not so much to religion but to metaphysics.  For there were other states, which you could see, and which Jesus knew well about, but knew that wasn’t so (now?) and is telling his disciples the time will come when those appearances will be stripped.  If the science of Jesus were taught as physics plus the metaphysical the churches would be filled.

5  A challenge not to be so literal.

(Here MBM read a passage from the Gospel of Thomas, which shows how Thomas said, following a situation in the life of Jesus, this same thing a little more expanded, clearly.)  (Don’t have the passage. GB) From the Infancy Gospel.  Around the letters (of the alphabet) are built supreme Wisdom.  As in symbolism great Wisdom is built around the symbol of the sun ⦿ and the point in it.

The first letter in the Jewish alphabet; with it was associated a great learning.  Number (philosophy of) and philosophy connected up with the alphabet.  ….  Jesus knows that Zacchaeus knew only the letter of the law.

Should we not seek and he astonished?  We will learn and go on and on.  These words of Jesus continually indicate the process, but the process — not the static interpretation but the process — of growth, of moving to spiritual from material realities, of coming to fulfillment of our own stature, and then beginning to live – not the end, but beginning to live.

Whatever we enjoyed before then is very little although we thought it much.  As this saying says, we will marvel, and marveling we will continue and in continuing we will discover something of the Goal.

I hope that in these words of Jesus you have gotten something of the link that binds His Teachings to this age.  It is this link which is the foundation on which the new religion will be erected.  But it will contain immeasurably more, for we of the future are not content with what we have learned in the past.  We are not with the things of the physical world.  Should we be less dissatisfied with the limitation of our knowledge regarding immensities?

Wisdom-lore

Cosmic framework of laws and principles.

Movement of heavenly bodies, outward sign.

Behind the natural law.

Governing the universe and the evolution of humanity.

Coming from the Source; Called by many names: All Father, First Cause, Great Mind, Deity, etc.

3 main divisions

Philosophy: the love of Wisdom.  Differs from philosophies, which are man-made theories, speculations, often reaching high, to explain the universe and man’s behaviors in it.  Love is seeking, questing, reaching toward; gradually applying in daily life, attitudes, behaviors.

Cosmogonies: stages of the making of worlds; allegorized in all the great racial traditions; gods often representing Cosmic forces and intelligences.  Agree in all basics.  Brief in Hebraic-Christian.

Stories of descent: re man; denser conditions, finally Red Adam.

Stories of ascent: our main concern.  Concern of religion, especially on its esoteric side, mystical side.  Mystical meaning a relation to planes, conditions of life, beyond the 3rd dimension, our material world.  In esoteric religion, the relationship is experiential.

Jesus one of the great Teachers who come from time to time to aid humanity in its evolution.  Evolution of the soul; different from evolution of the body.

These processes are referred to in the Teachings of Jesus, but in the language of his day.  MBM, in the language of the modern day of a more general knowledge of science.  He taught in stories, parables, lessons for the multitude.  Heart and faith, the dynamic of that time.

Where the Wisdom-teachings are found.

Symbolism

But his teaching had to be in the language of symbolism.  Why?  Allegories are symbols in story, or dramatic, form.  Images.  Our subconscious also talks in the language of images, after the first, or purely reflective, layers.

Symbols stand for ideas, concepts, intangibles but have to use things and people of earth as having some similarity with the idea.  House, condition of man; householder, one in charge of the household of the self, or selves.

Wisdom-lore everywhere is told or written in the language of symbolism.  Includes other dimensions (ex: kingdom of Heaven).  A universal language.  We shall touch on some of its departments.  Example: mountain for higher consciousness (Jesus withdrew to mountain when in communication with higher planes – symb.)  Different from neighboring planes, philosophically earth-water.  Symbols of the 4 elements.  Of number, as Jesus at the age of 12. . . . .

If you know the language of symbolism you can tell whether a scripture, or part of a scripture, an epic, saga, myth, belongs to Wisdom-Teachings.  Part of MBM’s task, to teach this language; but everyone interested can learn it.  Through it learn something of our own individual progression over the long career.

4. He who seeketh me shall find me in children from seven years (onward); for hidden in them I am manifested in the fourteenth period (Aeon).

5. What ye preach with words before the people, do ye in deeds before every man.

1. . . .and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

2. Jesus saith, Except ye fast to the world, ye shall in no wise find the kingdom of God; and except ye make the sabbath a real sabbath, ye shall not see the Father.

3. Jesus saith, I stood in the midst of the world and in the flesh was I seen of them, and I found all men drunken, and none found I athirst among them, and my soul grieveth over the sons of men, because they are blind in their heart and see not ….

4. . . .poverty.

5. Jesus saith, Wherever there are (two), they are not without God, and wherever there is one alone, I say, I am with him. Raise the stone, and there thou shalt find me; cleave the wood, and there am I.

6. Jesus saith, A prophet is not acceptable in his own country, neither doth a physician work cures upon them that know him.

7. Jesus saith, A city built upon the top of a high hi11 and stablished, can neither fall nor be hid.

8. Jesus saith, Thou hearest with one ear, (but with the other thou hast closed).

INTRODUCTION as found on the papyri

These are the (wonderful) words which Jesus, the living (Lord) spake to ….. and Thomas, and he said unto (them), Every one that hearkens to these words shall never taste of death.

1. Jesus saith, Let not him who seeks … not cease until he finds, and when he.finds he shall be astonished; astonished he shall reach the kingdom, and having reached the kingdom, he shall, rest (attainment).

2. Jesus saith, (Ye ask who are those) that draw us (to the kingdom, if) the kingdom is in Heaven? . . . . the fowls of the air, and all the beasts that are under the earth or upon the earth, and the fishes of the sea, (these are they which draw) you, and the kingdom of Heaven is within you; and whoever shall know himself shall find it.(Strive therefore?) to know yourselves, and ye shall know that ye are the sons of the (almighty) Father; (and) ye shall know that ye are in (the city of God?) and ye are (the city).

3. Jesus saith, A man shall not hesitate … to ask … concerning his place (in the kingdom.Ye shall know) that many that are first shall be last, and the last first and (they shall have eternal life?).

4. Jesus saith, Everything that is not before thy face and that which is hidden from thee shall be revealed to thee.For there is nothing hidden which shall not be made manifest, nor buried which shall not be raised.

5. His disciples question him and say, How shall we fast and how shall we (pray) … and what (commandment) shall we keep … Jesus saith, … do not … ..of truth ….. blessed is he……

NOTE: There are many other non-canonical (often called “extra-canonical”) sayings of Jesus which have been collected by scholars.  Many of them bear the same rich mystical imprint of the “kingly science” of man and Deity which are in some of the “Sayings” discussed in these two classes.  Mrs. Mayer regrets that she can only acknowledge their existence and affirm their content in this brief course.

Our objective is to find the wisdom behind these sayings

One way is by comparison, also by a knowledge of Wisdom teachings

the Challenge is that the real purpose of life is for Spirit

The seed in you corresponding to the octave of ? which is nous or spirit

the seed of the immortal part in you – for ? all experience is to be gathered.  You live to bring back values to that spirit

Light is consciousness of that spirit

The HS is not to be linked to feebleness of stature

Oxyrhynchus sayings date from 1st century – Gospels based on them – “Jesus Said;

1- It is the fashion of men and women also to pass away to another world.

2- Eliminates the frantic haste in grabbing at life.

3- Wisdom as a definite reality – not only the sum total of universal law – but is a power – an Aeon

That from which issue Teachers, and they are as children compared to the great reservoir of cosmic stature.

4- 3 octaves of life – gradation in three mighty steps

3rd step to be attained only after the 2nd

Observe – the mystery must be achieved – carried out – in the pattern.

The activity must be in key with that which is sought

Paul speaks of Mysteries

the more you know of the WL of other traditions, the more you revere Jesus

These sayings bring into contour the clarity of his stature-  bring it into the universal for all times and for all men

In the Little Mysteries

You learn of the soul – how it is to be matured – belongs to the story  of the soul

The Greater Mysteries pertain to Nous- to Mind- to Spirit and take the pilgrim into cosmic regions, cosmic patterns and purposes- but first you must fulfill the stature of the soul, before you can actually know of the greater mysteries

the Christian fathers became alarmed that the teaching of Jesus was so akin to that of the esoteric centers of the day so they took the stand in defense, that his teachings was a beginning of something new.

5- Caution – Law of cause and effect always at work.  Every initiate knows that – every thought is impressed on the ethers – the matrix remains — the reverberation of that impressions continues – what is done comes back somehow.

the stars are of course inhabited but not by physical bodies “In that elastic medium called the ether”

It is a disadvantage to conceive only of this dimension.

The same things will be said only more hardheadedly in the Aquarian age.

 

Experiences go to make substance – substance is being shaped by you every moment of the day.

To acquaint the trainee in the mysteries with the actual facts – the impressionableethers will take their toll

6- More hidden – more calling on the knowledge of the hearer

We – the Christ seed – which makes the Son of man

Birth of the final octave – can complete the evolution of that soul – every octave born of the previous one

Children – such vast stages beyond – in each new stage, begin as a little child.

7 years – has grown up under the ample influence of the 7

The central unknown mystery must be maturing that soul

14th period – on a superlative octave.

7 if you identify yourself with nous, you miss the entire dynamic of the soul – in daily life, in conduct, in knowledge of processes, in understanding of life, show that you are dwarfs

Mt – polarization in higher  consciousness

scattered – dismemberment motive – gathering toward a larger goal.  The great man is scattered, he is and is not.

shattering – a Gnostic teaching

8- Fast

Christianity is not traveling very well, must have more barnacles taken off soon.

in the science of the soul you give up one thing to get another – fast – to yield up

9— the  right attitude is basis for work in the ethers.  Faith – the substance of things hoped for

10- Challenge to full hearing and doing

the ears of the soul – ears associated with strange and sacred animal – the ass – ears part of mystery language

15- What is my part in the scheme of things?

not everyone has a role to play but can make a role and activate the process and so develop to a point where have a part in the larger scheme

things are not as they are seen – but depend on the powers developed

16- Modern Science is coming close to prima materia.

Out of coal tar- a scheme of radiant  colors

Work in all that belongs to prima materia – an occult thing

when you work with the higher, you work with a paradox without resolving the contradiction in a Zero.

17- Mystery language

Money — a valuable, commodity which can be exchanged for something else.  What is like money in the self?

Powers in the self are as money – steadfastness, perseverance, insight, truth

must do this for mystical alchemy.

18- contagious magic

metaphysics – the knowledge of the laws that govern such processes

20- Achievement of the goal through identification is a useful exercise, but is always  an error

The exclusiveness of Christian teaching will fade but its content will  enter the brotherhood  of teachings.

 

Those who have attained by stature and knowledge are Gnostics.

12- The seed of the last octave of human development which we call the Christos stage

“I am with him” like Gospels

There am I – Gnostic

Stone – enduring, of the phenomenal.

Wood – product of growth of the vegetative world – Part of the tree – the tree of evolving life of the individual

Raise the stone – the way of evolving – the law that makes for the Christos octave.

Pierce the wood – related to the life stream – the juice of the tree, the sap – it opens up life – you look at the inside

when the soul node is exposed, the same living force is flowing forth

Jesus – as the Logos is speaking – the Wisdom Carrier.

Jesus taught in the age of faith, hope and charity.  We are now on the threshold of the age of knowledge, understanding and brotherhood. Therefore the Teachings of Jesus must be examined anew.  They are not spent with the receding age.  Their deeper content will emerge as minds are ready to turn to the vast Framework of the Cosmos and the Wisdom of the ages.  Then absorption in earth will be replaced by understanding of the nature of this planet and the pattern of spiritual evolution.

Teachings of Jesus in the Light of Aquarius

Conceive  of a Teacher at work planting seed in the earth

     must consider the climate, the age, the mental activity

We are to see whether the Teachings of Jesus will meet our need now

We try to take new hold of them.

A kind of basic inquiry into content.

Keynote of his teachings have been: Faith, Love, Trust, Propitiation and attention on the individual.

What else is needed?

We may not realize it, but the development which came about through pointing up the role of Love led to the preparation for the crises of this age.

Love  The perception that men cannot Live in battle or antagonism

     with one another.

Leadership  No religion is complete through any leader – three things any leader must do – either a genuine Teacher, or a local one

The test  1-  He must speak in the language of his time

2-  This language must fulfill its gamut of 2,000 yrs.

     It must be the idiom of the period.

3-  True teacher must make a link with the age just

              preceding

4-  He must extend what he is doing so that it lays the

              foundation for what is to come.

Jesus life was lived on the stage of the world – the candidates are all humanity – the pain and the challenges met by Jesus – the pain all must meet.

A type of discovery not easily assimilated into the body of knowledge.

hardly assimilated at all except among scholars.

Oxyrhyncus – south of Cairo on the Nile

Egypt received eagerly the teachings of disciples who went south to the Nile

The quotations on the sheet have been known for a long time – they are  similar to the later Grenfell and Hunt findings.  Remarkable how legible the papyrus has remained.  Due to the quality of the paper and the way it was prepared.  The atmosphere is very dry and nothing rots.

They must have been spoken to very earnest inquirers, not necessarily to disciples.  Put aside any thoughts you may have as to Jesus or religion and search for content with your minds.  The general idea of religion is curiously in error.  There is validity in a gingerly attitude toward it.

1-  Text.  If ye observe not the little Mystery, who will give you the      great?

comment – In the bible, only three reference to the mysteries in the mouth of Jesus.  Superficially a mystery is something concealed and that is all.  A knowledge of Greater and Lesser Mysteries was common to Initiates of all traditions.

This saying refers to two great mysteries.  Since the day of Jesus, old privately known truths have been publicly stated.

This Being is speaking of what is known as cosmic science.  Apparently the listener is too eager for the Larger.  Humanity takes for granted that what it sees at the moment is the conclusion or goal.  With the perspective of the gamut, one could not be absorbed in the immediate.

2-  Text.  There is a mingling that leads to death and there is a mingling that leadeth unto life.

   comment    mingling, mixing, in every act.  It is always a

              complicated process –

              a complicated structure here – classed under

              progressive and regressive.

In the Gnostic tradition of John, there is the mixing of bloods which means Life.

3-  Text  He who seeketh me shall find me in children of 7 years onward.

              For hidden in them I am manifested in the fourteenth period. (aeon.)

              the beginning of a new octave – a new stage.

              7 years – the sign of mystical development – belongs to the transcendental self.  A gamut or octave – it is necessary to go through a period of 7 before the seed of the Christ principle is planted.  The Christ in you is non-sense after (or before) the period of 7

              14th aeon – the 2nd octave of 7.  Rational processes though not visible – not the end

command either puts limitation on destruction or compels the disciple to a high standard – trued little by little to an understanding of these things.  Every Teacher has to pass through difficulties and the only thing that keeps them to it is following the demands of righteousness.

Logia – there are three types of Sayings that are lost – the uncanonical and those found recently – the Oxyrhyncus Sayings

1-  Text  warning to those who are too eager to help others.  “Until you do this you can’t see clearly.”

        Illus. people feel so and so – must first see clearly themselves.  All teachers should be psychoanalysed – unless it takes the beams out of their eyes, they see through their fears, prejudices, feelings, ambitions.  I would like to add, as we do hear, the science of the soul.  PA relates to maladaptation.  This is an eternal text for teachers of the mysteries.

        Sabbath – to cease – to rest – this is misunderstood as is Nirvana as extinction.  It is only extinction of certain stages.  The esoteric factor was to return the energies which had been extroverted to active introversion – relate it to the transcendental self or to one of cosmic life.

        Father – the Greater Mystery.  Must learn the rhythm of inward and outward going. It is not meditation.  Meditation is not enough.

        To find something stimulating, interesting is to keep the Sabbath

2-  text  drunken

        Drunk with the nectar of the gods, or, as here – absorbed in earth things.  What it must have meant to Jesus to come with so gallant and mighty an undertaking and find nobody athirst.

3-  text  Wheresoever there be two they are not without God, and wherever there is one alone, I say, I am with him.  Raise the stone and there thou shalt find me, cleave the wood and there am I.

        Twoness – two aspects – every teacher speaks on many levels.  Twoness is on the way to God

        One – the psyche can be alone – cns of Jesus may be there

        wood from the tree – growth in the psychic world, or astral plane.  If you split open the psychic plane, sooner or later you find the seed of the Christ power – the power to become of cosmic stature

        Stone – carrier of the idea of eternal things – can’t cleave the eternal – can raise or elevate the principles and laws on which the pattern of universal life is placed – there will find the pattern of Christ making.

        Not particularly religious – magnificent orderly process – thrilling, dynamic.

2nd lecture

1935

The Graeco-Roman branch of the exploration period – sought for sources of the Christian tradition in Egypt.  Grenfell and Hunt discoveries – of 1897

1903 – the Oxyrhyncus.

The texts of today were on roll-back of land survey list.  They are the first sayings, probably, several hundred, in that collection.

What is their relation to the synoptic gospels?  Research indicated that their source was the now lost book of Sayings.  These have a plus which the Bible sayings do not have.  The use of words, clauses, indicate a depth, a mysterious wisdom which in the Bible is simple or omitted.

The story of Thomas – on the basis of two or three instances.  Must have done him a great wrong.

In the Apocrypha, there are three versions of the infancy story by Thomas – there are also the Acts of Thomas – they have the same flavor as these Sayings – have mystic and gnostic character.

There are many stories of Mary and Jesus

Irenaeus.  There may not be more than 4 gospels – real reason – the correspondence with what we now call the bull, lion, man, eagle – glyph of the four energies

Infancy told in the Gospel of Thomas.  Jesus as a youngster of 5, while playing made 12 pools, formed 12 clay pigeons  .Breaking the Sabbath.  They flew off as Jesus clapped his hands.

corresponding passage in the synoptic gospels.  “And Jesus grew in strength” claiming the birds.  A detail in the occult allegory.

Gnostic groups   groups whose major interest was reality – in W. Asia, and N. Africabefore and after Jesus.  Had secret wisdom lore.

The Church Fathers saw only one thing – the teaching of Jesus as God Incarnate – the only Son of God

The Naasenes    Serpent – the path of the eternal life force toward wisdom.

Lore from Syria, Chaldea, Egypt.  They accepted the teachings of Jesus because they fitted into the wisdom lore they had.

In Re Gnostic Sects – ‘It is a good word but I knew most of it before.’

A Gnostic is one who is living the Life of Cosmic Wisdom.

Thomas and one other were capable of recording the profounder teachings of Jesus.

Through the Book of Research of Dr Eisler, photoscopic copies of the records of the death of Jesus were made.  If Jesus is a religious leader it doesn’t cover his stature
